60 Degree Laundry Not Fresh After Washing

Laundry Not Smelling Fresh After 60 Degree Wash

It has been observed that laundry washed at 60 degrees Celsius (such as towels, underwear, and socks) does not always smell as fresh as other laundry, even when using the same detergent.

The Eco Program Issue

A common cause for this problem is the use of the ‘Eco’ program on washing machines. These programs are designed to save energy and water by running at lower temperatures and for shorter durations.

  • Temperature Discrepancy: The Eco program often does not reach the set 60 degrees Celsius. This can be felt by the lower temperature of the machine’s drum and the shorter period the laundry is exposed to heat compared to a standard wash cycle.
  • Resulting Odor: Consequently, the laundry is not effectively cleaned at the required high temperature, leading to a slight musty odor.

Solution for Fresher Laundry

To ensure laundry washed at 60 degrees Celsius comes out fresh, it is recommended to avoid the Eco program for these loads.

  • Recommended Practice: For laundry requiring 30 or 40 degrees Celsius, the Eco program can still be used. However, for 30-degree washes, select the next higher temperature setting (40 degrees), and for 40-degree washes, select 50 degrees. This ensures the washing machine reaches the desired temperature.
  • Effective Cleaning: By using the appropriate temperature settings and avoiding the Eco program for higher temperature washes, the washing machine can effectively reach the target temperature, resulting in cleaner and fresher laundry.
