Emojis have become an integral part of digital communication, adding nuance and emotion to text-based messages. These colorful icons have evolved from simple text-based emoticons to a diverse visual language.

From Emoticons to Emojis

Emojis originated from emoticons, which are composed of text characters. The term ’emoticon’ is a portmanteau of ’emotions’ and ‘icons.’ Professor Scott E. Fahlman is credited with proposing the use of :) in his computer science course to denote non-serious messages, a precursor to the modern smiley face.

In the 1990s, Japanese designer Shigetaka Kurita created the first set of 176 distinct emojis for the mobile carrier NTT DoCoMo. This marked the transition from text-based emoticons to graphical representations, laying the foundation for the emoji language that would eventually spread globally.

Many text input programs automatically convert emoticons into their corresponding emoji images. While variations exist, a standardized digital coding, largely based on Kurita’s work, ensures consistent interpretation across platforms.

Understanding Emoji Meanings

There are no strict rules for using emojis, allowing for creative interpretation. However, differing understandings can lead to misunderstandings. The Unicode standard provides definitions, though popular usage can diverge.

Commonly Misinterpreted Emojis:

• Raised Hands: Often perceived as warding off or calming, these hands actually symbolize openness or a hug.
• Person Gesturing No (Ok): While appearing to dance, this emoji signifies ‘okay’ or agreement by forming an ‘O’ shape with the arms.
• Face with Cold Sweat: This emoji is not sad; the sweat drop indicates anxiety or worry.
• Folded Hands: These are not high-five hands but are meant to represent praying or pleading.
• Bowing Person: This signifies a respectful bow, not contemplation of a difficult task.
• Weary Face: This emoji indicates tiredness, not a feeling of wanting to cry.
• Hugging Face: Contrary to a waving gesture, this emoji represents a hug.
• Sleepy Face: This emoji depicts someone so tired they are about to drool, not sadness.
• Face Screaming in Fear: This emoji expresses shock or fear, often interpreted as shouting “Oh my goodness!”

• Fist: This emoji can represent a punch, a threat of violence, or a gesture of praise and agreement.
• Grinning Face with Smiling Eyes: Officially a light smile, it’s often used by younger people to convey a forced smile in situations requiring politeness.
• Grinning Face with One Closed Eye: Described by Unicode as a mischievous grin, it can also convey suggestion or knowing winks.
• Flushed Face: Typically indicating heat or embarrassment, it is also used to signify attraction.
• Peach: While innocent by definition, the peach emoji has become a popular slang representation of a butt.
