Adhering Paper Flatly and Without Wrinkles to Wood/Cardboard

This guide outlines a method for adhering decorative paper smoothly and without wrinkles to rigid surfaces such as wood or cardboard. This technique is particularly useful for crafting projects where a pristine finish is desired, such as decorating gift boxes or plaques.

The suggested material for this purpose is Vliesofix, a double-sided fusible interfacing. This thin, adhesive fabric web is typically available by the meter in fabric stores and is designed for permanently bonding various materials, including fabric, paper, and leather.

Application Steps:

  1. Apply Vliesofix to Paper: Iron Vliesofix onto the back of the paper according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  2. Fuse Paper to Substrate: Remove the protective backing from the second adhesive side of the Vliesofix. Position the paper onto the substrate (e.g., a pressboard or cardboard) and iron it in place. This creates a strong, permanent bond.
  3. Achieve a Wrinkle-Free Finish: Even without using a damp cloth during ironing, as sometimes recommended, the paper adheres smoothly and without wrinkles to the substrate.

Advantages of Vliesofix:

  • No Liquid Mess: Eliminates the need for liquid glues, brushes, or other messy application tools.
  • Clean Process: Provides a clean and efficient adhesion process.
  • Durability: The bond is permanent and can withstand washing or dry cleaning if applied to textiles.
  • Versatility: Suitable for various craft applications, including fabric appliques on textiles and reinforcing the interior of greeting cards.

Additional Uses (Saum-Vlies):

Vliesofix is also available in a narrow tape form, often called “Saum-Vlies” (hem fleece). This tape is useful for hemming fabrics without sewing, especially with slippery, thin, or transparent materials. It allows for the creation of neat hems that are invisible from the right side of the fabric.
