Ants in the House - What Really Helps!

Preventing Ants in Your Home
While ants are beneficial in nature, their presence inside the home can be a nuisance. The following method offers a simple and effective way to deter ants from entering.
The Method:
- Identify Entry Points: Locate the primary entrances ants are using to access your home.
- Apply Cocoa Butter Barrier: Create a barrier around these entry points. Apply a generous 10 cm wide strip of melted cocoa butter around each identified entrance.
Why Cocoa Butter Works:
Cocoa butter is an excellent choice for this purpose due to several key properties:
- Odorless: It does not possess any scent that might attract or repel ants independently.
- High Melting Point: This ensures the barrier remains effective for a longer duration.
- Non-Toxic: It is completely safe for household use.
- Ant Deterrent: Ants are known to avoid crossing fatty substances like cocoa butter. The exact reason for this aversion is not fully understood, but the effectiveness is reliably observed.
While oil can also be used, it may develop an unpleasant odor over time and become sticky.
Considerations:
- Dirt Accumulation: The fatty layer may attract airborne particles and dirt.
- Slipping Hazard: In certain locations, the barrier might pose a minor slipping risk. However, this risk becomes negligible once the ants find an alternative route.
Previous applications have proven successful in sealing off entry points in door frames and silicone seals. In cases where ants created new passages nearby, applying the barrier to the entire joint resolved the issue, leading to a lasting deterrent.
