Aphids III, Wasp Control

In gardens, the sudden mass appearance of aphids on ornamental shrubs, roses, peach, nectarine, and other fruit trees can be effectively managed with an inexpensive, non-toxic biological solution.
Aphid Control
Solution Preparation
For most plants (ornamental shrubs, roses, peach, nectarine, other fruit trees):
- Combine 4.5 liters of water with 0.5 liters of 5% vinegar and a few drops of dish soap (as a wetting agent) in a 5-liter sprayer.
For apple trees:
- Use 4.7 liters of water with 0.3 liters of vinegar.
Caution: For delicate leaves or new growth, begin with a weaker solution and observe the leaves for any burning.
Application
- Ensure the underside of the leaves, especially on peach trees, are thoroughly wet.
- For severe infestations, repeat the spraying as needed.
Prevention
- Ant Management: To prevent aphids, destroy any ant nests found under peach trees or scatter ant powder close to the tree trunk.
- Biological Method (Patience Required): As a completely biological alternative to ant powder, a small mesh bag filled with sawdust can be attached to a branch fork on the tree trunk. Earwigs will settle there and naturally eliminate aphids. This method requires more time.
Wasp Control
Solution Preparation & Application
- The same spray solution used for aphids is also effective for destroying small wasp nests.
- Using an extended sprayer, thoroughly soak the nest from a safe distance.
Post-Application
- Wasps will fall to the ground within seconds, writhing and unable to fly.
- Crucial Step: Wasps can recover after a few minutes. Therefore, immediately crush the fallen insects (wearing sturdy footwear) to ensure their demise.
