Attracting Flies for Carnivorous Plants

Attracting Prey for Carnivorous Plants
If your carnivorous plant is not catching sufficient prey, a simple method can be employed to attract flies directly to its vicinity.
Method for Attracting Flies
- Prepare the Lure: Obtain a small screw-top glass jar (such as an empty horseradish jar). Fill this jar with small pieces of meat scraps. Examples include fish, pork, or shrimp remnants.
- Placement: Position the filled jar horizontally next to your carnivorous plant. Ensure the jar’s opening is oriented towards the plant. This setup encourages flies, attracted by the bait, to pass by the plant’s traps as they approach the jar.
- Effectiveness: This technique can be highly effective, often leading to carnivorous plant traps becoming filled with flies within a few days.
- Disposal: Once the plant has caught an adequate amount of prey, securely screw the lid onto the jar and dispose of it properly.
Important Considerations
- Odor and Fly Attraction: Be aware that this method will generate a strong odor and attract a considerable number of flies. It is recommended to implement this only in locations where this temporary nuisance is acceptable for 3-5 days, such as an infrequently used balcony.
- Maggot Development: After several days, maggots will begin to develop within the jar. To prevent them from crawling into or onto your plant, ensure the jar is not placed directly on or inside the plant’s pot or traps.
