Build a Cheap Magnetic Wall from an Iron Plate

Building a Budget-Friendly Magnetic Wall with an Iron Plate

Creating a magnetic or pinboard wall can be surprisingly expensive. A much more affordable and aesthetically pleasing alternative is to use a simple galvanized iron plate available at hardware stores. These plates come in various sizes.

Important: Do not use an aluminum plate, even if it appears brighter or lighter. Aluminum is not a ferromagnetic metal, meaning magnets will not adhere to it.

Mounting the Iron Plate

There are two primary methods for attaching the iron plate to the wall:

  1. Drilling Holes: Use a steel drill bit to create two holes in the iron plate. Then, drill corresponding holes in the wall and secure the plate using strong nails or, preferably, screws with wall anchors.
  2. Adhesive Mounting: Apply strong double-sided tape to the back of the plate and press it firmly against the wall. Be cautious with this method, as precise placement is crucial, and repositioning or removal will likely damage the wallpaper.

Customization and Maintenance

For a personalized touch, consider painting the iron plate before mounting. Spray paint can add color, or stencils can be used for decorative motifs. A coat of paint also serves to protect the plate itself.

If the plate is left untreated, be aware that the zinc coating can potentially stain the wall behind it. Additionally, writing on the plate with an erasable marker and wiping it off may result in some of the black zinc residue being removed.

Despite these considerations, an untreated iron plate mounted directly to the wall offers a clean, flush appearance.
