The Science Behind It: Theobromine and Cocoa Butter
The key active compound in chocolate responsible for its cough-suppressing effects is Theobromine. Research, including a study by Alyn Morris at the University of Hull in Yorkshire, has explored this. Participants in the study were administered either a chocolate-based preparation or codeine, with the chocolate-based option demonstrating superior results in alleviating cough symptoms.
The effectiveness of chocolate in cough relief is directly linked to its cocoa content: the darker the chocolate, the higher its Theobromine concentration.
Furthermore, cocoa butter, a component of chocolate, melts at body temperature. This property is why it is often used as a carrier in cosmetics and medicines. When chocolate slowly melts in the mouth, the liquefied cocoa butter forms a protective film over the mucous membranes in the throat, which helps to soothe irritation and reduce the urge to cough.
Important Considerations
While chocolate can be an effective remedy for coughs, there are crucial points to remember:
- Danger to Pets: Theobromine, despite its beneficial effects for humans, is highly toxic and potentially fatal for animals, especially dogs and cats. Under no circumstances should pets be given chocolate.
