Cleaning the Toilet with Household Remedies – Guide and Tips

Effective Toilet Cleaning with Household Remedies

Maintaining a clean toilet is essential. This guide outlines effective and environmentally friendly methods using common household items, avoiding expensive specialized cleaners.

Cleaning the Toilet Bowl

Allow cleaning agents to soak for optimal results. For stubborn stains, discoloration, and limescale, various household remedies can be employed:

  • Vinegar Essence: Approximately 100 ml of vinegar essence or regular vinegar can tackle limescale and brown deposits. Let it sit for about 15 minutes.
  • Baking Soda or Baking Powder: For tough, dark stains, mix 2-3 tablespoons of baking soda or baking powder into the bowl. The resulting foam helps loosen dirt and can also benefit the drain. This mixture can be left to soak for longer periods.
  • Citric Acid and Baking Soda: A combination of 3-4 tablespoons of citric acid and some baking soda also effectively cleans and deodorizes. This can be left overnight, followed by scrubbing and flushing.
  • Dishwasher Powder or Tabs: Sprinkle dishwasher powder or dissolve a dishwasher tablet in hot water and pour it into the bowl. Let it soak for several hours or overnight before scrubbing and flushing.
  • Denture Cleaner: Denture cleaning tablets can also be used for effective cleaning.

Cleaning the Toilet Brush

To clean the toilet brush and holder simultaneously, place the brush in the bowl while the cleaning agent is soaking. The brush handle and holder can be cleaned and disinfected with a mixture of vinegar and water.

Cleaning the Toilet Rim

To address urine scale and odors under the toilet rim:

  • Apply homemade toilet cleaner directly to the rim and let it sit.
  • For heavy deposits, soak wads of toilet paper in diluted vinegar essence (1:1 ratio) or diluted citric acid. Stuff the soaked paper under the rim and let it sit for at least 30 minutes, or overnight if necessary. Remove the paper and flush. Scrub the rim with the toilet brush and flush again.
  • An old toothbrush can be useful for reaching difficult areas under the rim.

Cleaning the Toilet Seat and Lid

Clean the toilet seat and lid using a mild cleaner made from water and a small amount of soap (dish soap or bar soap).

  • Wipe down the exterior of the toilet seat and lid, the flush button, and the cistern (if applicable).
  • Rinse with clean water and dry with a soft cloth.
  • The underside of the toilet lid, which can come into contact with splashes, should be cleaned with the same cleaning solution.
  • For stains on the underside of the seat, a paste of baking soda or baking powder mixed with water can be used. Apply, scrub, and then wipe with a damp cloth.
  • Clean the hinges with an old toothbrush and vinegar cleaner, then wipe with clean water and dry.
  • Important: Clean the inside of the cistern annually to remove limescale.

Cleaning Rags

Wash used cleaning rags immediately after use at a minimum of 60°C in the washing machine and ensure they are dried thoroughly.

Frequency of Toilet Cleaning

The frequency of cleaning depends on personal preference and the number of users.

  • Regular cleaning prevents the buildup of urine scale, limescale, and discoloration, saving time and effort in the long run.
  • It is recommended to perform quick clean-ups several times a week and a thorough cleaning weekly.

When cleaning, it is important to use separate cloths for different areas to maintain hygiene.
