Collecting walnuts from a tree can be a productive activity, especially when the tree yields a bountiful harvest. Various methods can be employed, from picking them up individually to raking them. Method for Efficient Walnut Collection

1. Preparation: When the first walnuts begin to fall, spread old sheer curtains or fine nets beneath the tree. These materials can be sewn together for larger coverage.
2. Collection: Once a sufficient amount of walnuts and leaves have accumulated, gather the edges of the fabric to create a makeshift “nut and leaf bag.” This bag can then be emptied into a suitable container.
3. Sorting: The collected material will likely contain leaves and walnut shells, requiring a sorting process. This can be a pleasant task performed outdoors on pleasant days.

Advantages of Using Sheer Curtains or Fine Nets

These materials offer several benefits compared to impermeable materials like plastic sheeting:

• Water Drainage: They allow rainwater to pass through, preventing walnuts from sitting in water.
• Light Permeability: They permit sunlight to reach the ground, minimizing damage to grass or other plants.
• Air Circulation: They allow wind to pass through, aiding in the drying of the nuts and leaves on pleasant autumn days.
• Wind Resistance: Their wind-permeable nature means they are less likely to be blown away. Securing the edges with stones is usually sufficient, and the material can withstand strong winds.

This method also significantly reduces the need for raking leaves from under the tree.
