Crafting a Pumpkin from Balloon and Papier-mâché

Crafting a Pumpkin from Balloon and Papier-mâché
This guide explains how to create a decorative pumpkin using a balloon and papier-mâché, ideal for Halloween.
Materials Needed:
- Balloon
- Packing tape or yarn
- Newspaper or tracing paper
- Paste
- Acrylic paint
- White paint
Steps for Creating Your Pumpkin:
Prepare the Balloon:
- Ideally, use a balloon that has been inflated for a few days and has lost some air. If no such balloon is available, inflate a new balloon as large as possible, tie it securely with a string, and let it rest for a while. Afterward, untie the string, release some air, and re-inflate it to the desired pumpkin size before tying it off again.
Form the Pumpkin Shape:
- Wrap packing tape or yarn tightly around the balloon, mimicking the characteristic shape of a pumpkin. Ensure the material is taut to maintain the form.
Apply Papier-mâché:
- Brush paste onto the balloon and cover it with two layers of tracing paper or newspaper.
Create the Stem:
- Shape the stem using packing paper or a piece of brown paper bag and attach it to the top of the pumpkin.
Drying and Painting:
- Allow the pumpkin to dry completely for at least one day.
- Paint the entire pumpkin orange using acrylic paint.
- To add depth and realism, outline the indentations typical of a pumpkin using a slightly lighter shade of orange. This will make the craft resemble a real pumpkin.
