Crafting Sustainable Christmas Tree Ornaments from Recycled Paper

This guide details how to create charming and eco-friendly Christmas tree ornaments using old magazines and paper. These colorful tree-shaped decorations are not only ideal for adorning your Christmas tree but also serve as sustainable gift toppers.

Materials Needed:

  • Old magazines
  • Wooden skewer
  • Scissors
  • Glue

Step-by-Step Guide to Crafting Paper Tree Ornaments:

  1. Prepare Paper Strips: Select pages from old magazines with visually appealing colors or patterns. Cut these pages lengthwise into strips approximately 3 cm wide.
  2. Roll Paper Strips: Using a wooden skewer as a guide, roll each paper strip diagonally from the bottom right corner to the top left corner. Secure the end with glue and flatten the rolled strip. Approximately eight strips are needed per tree ornament, depending on the paper thickness.
  3. Form Paper Rolls: Roll the flattened paper strips into tight circles. Secure the end with glue, ensuring the roll remains firm to prevent it from unraveling.
  4. Assemble Ornament Components: To create one tree ornament, you will need:
    • Two large rolls made from a full strip each.
    • Three medium-sized rolls made from half a strip each.
    • Three small rolls made from approximately one-third of a strip each.
    • Two rolls with a slight corner bend.
    • One strip rolled to form the tree trunk.
    • One strip for the outer border. (Refer to images for visual guidance on component sizes and shapes.)
  5. Glue Components: Arrange the prepared paper rolls into the desired tree shape. Glue the individual parts together and allow them to dry completely.
  6. Add Outer Border and Hanger: Once the glue has dried, attach the border strip. Fold the border strip in half to create the tree’s top point. Gradually crease the border strip to form a staircase-like effect that drapes over the assembled rolls. Secure the border once the creases are correctly positioned. Finally, thread a ribbon through the top point to create a hanger for your finished ornament.
