Crafting Paper Lanterns for Advent

This guide provides instructions for crafting decorative paper lanterns, particularly suitable for the Advent season.
Materials Needed:
- Standard colored paper (80g/m², similar to printer paper) or cardstock
- Craft template for printing or a cutting file for a plotter
- Strong adhesive (not a glue stick, as it can degrade over time)
- Scissors or a plotter
- Cooking oil or similar
- Brush for applying oil
- Newspaper for a drip surface
- Standard-sized tealights
Crafting Steps:
- Select Colored Paper: Choose your desired colored paper.
- Prepare Template: Print the craft template once and copy it onto your colored papers. The template typically contains two designs per A4 sheet.
- Cut Along Lines: Make five cuts along the thick red lines indicated on the template.
- Fold and Glue: On each cut line, there are two triangular sections. Fold these sections along the dashed lines and glue them together.
- Form the Lantern: This will create a five-pointed shape.
- Oil the Lanterns: Place the formed lanterns on newspaper. Have a shallow dish with oil and a brush ready.
- Apply Oil: Carefully coat the lanterns with a small amount of oil, first on the inside, then on the outside.
- Drying: Turn the oiled lanterns upside down on a separate piece of newspaper to dry.
- Further Drying: After two hours, gently blot any excess oil with paper towels. Allow the lanterns to dry overnight, changing the newspaper underneath as oil may drip from the points.
Durability Test:
Once the lanterns are completely dry, they can be tested. Place a lantern directly on a table surface with a tealight inside. The material remains cool and does not burn.
These lanterns, when lit, are intended to add a magical ambiance. For gifting on Christmas Eve, they can be arranged on a platter with pine branches and other decorations. Dimming the room lights and lighting the tealights before presenting them is an effective way to showcase their radiance.
