Cutting Paper: Trash Bags Instead of Tissue Paper for Patterns

A Cost-Effective Alternative to Tissue Paper for Sewing Patterns
Sewing enthusiasts often face the expense of specialized tissue paper for tracing sewing patterns. This guide offers a budget-friendly solution: using trash bags as a substitute for pattern paper.
Method:
- Obtain Trash Bags: Purchase inexpensive trash bags. For example, a pack of 20 trash bags for 50-liter bins can be bought at a discount store for a minimal cost.
- Prepare the Film: Unroll the trash bag and cut off the sealed seam. Then, cut open one side of the “tube” to create a flat, translucent sheet.
- Combine Sheets (if necessary): If a single sheet is too small for a pattern, multiple pieces can be taped together using adhesive tape.
- Tracing: Use a permanent marker or special film marker to trace the pattern pieces onto the prepared plastic film.
Tips for Durability and Reuse:
- Reinforce Pinholes: For patterns that are used frequently, reinforce areas where pins will be inserted with small pieces of adhesive tape to prevent tearing.
- Storage: The prepared film sheets are compact and can be stored efficiently. Consider using clear plastic sleeves organized in a binder, with separate sections for each family member’s patterns.
- Erasing Marks: Marks made with film markers or permanent markers can be removed from the plastic film using acetone-free nail polish remover and a cotton pad or tissue. This allows for corrections if mistakes are made during tracing.
This method provides a significantly more economical way to create and reuse sewing patterns.
