Decorative and Scented Hearts

Creating Decorative and Scented Hearts from Fabric Scraps

This guide details how to repurpose fabric scraps into charming decorative items, such as scented hearts and small cushions.

Materials and Tools:

  • Fabric scraps
  • Paper for templates
  • Sewing machine
  • Needle and thread
  • Stuffing (e.g., poly-fill)
  • Ribbons and beads for decoration
  • Scented oil (optional)
  • Cotton pads (optional)

Crafting Fabric Hearts:

  1. Create Templates: Fashion heart-shaped templates from paper in various sizes.
  2. Cut Fabric: Use the templates to cut out heart shapes from the fabric scraps.
  3. Sew Hearts: Stitch the fabric pieces together using a sewing machine, leaving a small opening.
  4. Turn and Stuff: Turn the fabric hearts right-side out and fill them with stuffing.
  5. Close Opening: Hand-sew the opening closed.
  6. Decorate: Embellish the finished hearts with beads and ribbons.
  7. Add Hanging Loop: Sew a longer ribbon or cord to the top of the heart to create a hanging loop.

These decorative hearts can be hung on drawer knobs, door handles, or clothing hangers.

Adding Scent:

To infuse the hearts with fragrance:

  • Place a cotton pad with a few drops of scented oil (e.g., rose, lavender) inside the heart before sewing it closed.
  • Alternatively, lightly spray the finished hearts with perfume.

Creating Decorative Cushions:

  1. Cut and Sew: Cut fabric scraps and sew them into small cushion shapes.
  2. Embellish: Embroider or decorate the cushions as desired.

These small cushions are ideal for decorative placement on windowsills, nightstands, or bathrooms.

Gifting Ideas:

These handmade hearts and cushions also make excellent gifts. They can be attached to packages, bouquets, or given as thoughtful thank-you presents.
