Designing and Making a Voucher Packaging

Designing and Crafting a Custom Voucher Packaging

This guide outlines the process of creating a unique envelope to present a voucher. Instead of using a standard envelope, this method involves crafting a personalized one from cardstock.

Materials Needed:

  • Cardstock (decorated or plain)
  • Pencil
  • Eraser
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Bone folder (optional, but helpful for crisp folds)
  • Glue or adhesive
  • Decorative elements (e.g., ribbon, string, markers)

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Cardstock: Select cardstock. The material should be sturdy enough to form a package. If using patterned paper, ensure there is a plain side for writing.

  2. Measure and Fold for Voucher Width:

    • Place the voucher onto the cardstock. Fold one edge of the cardstock over the voucher, extending slightly past its center.
    • Determine the width needed to wrap entirely around the voucher, adding approximately 2 cm (about 0.8 inches) for an overlap to secure the long edges.
  3. Cut and Shape the Cardstock:

    • Trim any excess cardstock based on the width measurement.
    • To create a soft edge for the bottom of the envelope, use a saucer or similar round object to trace and lightly round the lower edge of the cardstock.
  4. Create the Folds:

    • Score and fold the cardstock at right angles to the long edges. These folds will form the sides of the envelope.
    • For a cleaner finish, especially with thick cardstock, unfold the crease, trim the inner overlapping section of the fold, and then refold. This prevents the inner layer from showing through.
  5. Assemble the Envelope Structure:

    • Begin by gluing the long edges together to form a seam.
    • Then, fold the shorter edge towards this seam and secure it with adhesive. This creates the basic envelope shape.
    • If the cardstock is stiff, weigh down the partially formed envelope and allow it to press for a period to ensure a good seal.
  6. Refine the Shape and Add Opening:

    • Align the voucher within the partially formed envelope. Adjust the top edge of the cardstock so it sits aesthetically above the voucher.
    • Trim the top edge as desired. The original design features a slightly curved bottom edge and a straight, right-angled top edge for contrast.
  7. Add Fastening and Decoration:

    • Determine the placement for securing the voucher. Using a hole punch or the end of a hole punch, create a hole or series of holes as needed for a fastening method.
    • Prepare a decorative strip from leftover cardstock. Fold it to determine how it will wrap around the package diagonally. Letter any desired text onto this strip.
    • Secure the ends of the decorative strip on the back of the package, placing them as low as possible.
    • Add any further embellishments, such as ribbons or bows, to personalize the packaging. Consider using fine-tipped pens for details like dates and names to avoid distracting from the cardstock pattern.
