Designing and Sewing Sun and Wind Protection

This guide outlines the process of designing and sewing a custom sun and wind protection barrier for a balcony. The goal is to create a functional, durable, and aesthetically pleasing screen that offers privacy and weather resistance.

Material Selection

To begin, select a weather-resistant, opaque, and tear-resistant fabric. Outdoor fabrics such as nylon canvas are suitable. The chosen color should be friendly and blend well with the surroundings. Ensure the fabric is suitable for sewing with a standard sewing machine.

Design and Pattern Creation

  1. Measure and Shape: Due to the non-rectangular shape of some balcony openings, particularly those extending to roof overhangs, a precise pattern is crucial.

    • Start by cutting a large piece of sturdy paper.
    • Hold the paper against the opening to get an approximate shape, especially for the top edge which may follow roof angles.
    • Use temporary hooks or fasteners at key points to hold the paper in place and refine the shape.
    • Adjust and trim the paper repeatedly, checking the fit from different angles, until the desired contour is achieved. This iterative process may involve working both on a ladder and on the ground.
    • Once the paper template accurately represents the required shape, transfer this pattern to the chosen fabric.
  2. Fabric Cutting:

    • Lay the fabric flat on a smooth surface, such as a kitchen floor, to allow for easy manipulation and accurate cutting.
    • Consider the fabric’s grainline to ensure proper drape and stability.
    • Add generous seam allowances, especially along the top edge where grommets will be installed and subjected to wind stress, and along the bottom and side edges for hemming.

Sewing the Sun and Wind Protection

  1. Hemming and Reinforcement:

    • Top Edge: Reinforce the top edge to accommodate grommets. This typically involves folding the fabric over to create a double layer or attaching a separate reinforcing strip. The shape of this reinforced edge should match the paper pattern.
    • Side and Bottom Edges: Hem the side and bottom edges for a clean finish and added durability.
  2. Attaching Reinforcements (for Grommets):

    • For areas where grommets will be installed, such as the top edge, attach a reinforcing fabric piece (a “besatz”) to the main fabric. This can be done by folding the fabric and sewing layers together.
    • Trim the seam allowances in the corners of the reinforcing piece close to the stitching to allow for a smooth fold to the other side.
    • Sew the reinforcing piece securely to the main fabric using a strong sewing machine thread.
  3. Topstitching:

    • Use a decorative or topstitching thread for the visible seams on the reinforced edges. A thicker thread can create a more robust and visually appealing finish.
    • When using thick thread from a large cone, a special cone thread holder is recommended to ensure consistent and smooth feeding.
    • Employ a sewing machine edge stitch foot for precise and parallel topstitching along the edges.
    • Adjust the stitch length to a slightly larger setting to accommodate the thicker thread.
    • Pin the fabric layers securely, perpendicular to the stitching line, to prevent shifting.
  4. Installing Grommets:

    • Mark the precise locations for the grommets on the reinforced edges.
    • Consider reinforcing the grommet areas further with fusible interfacing patches (e.g., Wonder Dots) to prevent tearing, especially with heavy-duty fabrics or high-stress areas.
    • Install the grommets using appropriate tools (e.g., hammer and setting die).
  5. Attachment Mechanisms:

    • Lower Edges: Secure the bottom corners of the windbreak to the balcony railing using ropes or cords passed through the bottom hem and attached to existing fixtures or drilled holes.
    • Upper Edge: For easy installation and removal, especially at higher points, consider a system involving a long pole. The pole can be hooked into the top grommets, allowing the windbreak to be raised or lowered without a ladder. Hooks in the gutter or other elevated points can then be used to secure the pole-mounted windbreak.

Final Touches

Ensure all seams are secure and the grommets are firmly attached. The finished windbreak should provide effective protection from sun and wind, enhancing the comfort and privacy of the balcony space.
