Diet for Diarrhea

Diet for Diarrhea

When experiencing diarrhea, specific dietary adjustments can help alleviate symptoms and support recovery. The focus should be on easily digestible foods that can help bind fluids and replenish lost nutrients.

  • Grated Apple: Apples, particularly the peel, contain pectin, a soluble fiber that can help bind fluids in the intestines. Grating the apple increases its surface area, making the pectin more accessible. Allow the grated apple to sit for a short time until it turns brownish due to oxidation. Consume no more than 2-3 grated apples per day. Avoid adding lemon juice or sugar to the grated apple, as excess sugar and acidity can irritate a sensitive stomach.
  • Soups and Broths: Instant soups (e.g., chicken, asparagus) and savory broths without fresh meat or vegetables (except finely cut carrots) are beneficial. These help replace lost fluids and minerals, especially salt.
  • Potato Mash: Plain potato mash, prepared without milk, mixed with grated carrot, is a good option.
  • Dry, Salty Snacks: Zwieback (rusks), pretzels, and similar dry, salty baked goods with low fat content can help bind fluids.
  • Teas: Peppermint, chamomile, and fennel teas are soothing. They can be lightly sweetened with glucose or regular sugar. Brew black tea for no more than 3 minutes, as it can have a dehydrating effect, and sweeten it lightly if desired.

Foods to Avoid:

  • Dairy Products: Milk, yogurt, cheese, and other dairy products should be avoided.
  • Fatty Foods: Foods high in fat can be difficult to digest.
  • Acidic Foods: Except for grated apple, other acidic fruits and vegetables should be avoided.
  • Sugary Drinks: Cola and other carbonated beverages with high sugar content are not recommended. The carbonation can worsen diarrhea, and the high sugar content is detrimental.
  • Raw Fruits and Vegetables: With the exception of grated apple and carrot, raw fruits and vegetables are generally harder to digest and can be irritating to the digestive tract due to their acids and sugar content.
  • Spicy or Strong Spices: These can irritate the stomach.
  • Temperature Extremes: Avoid foods that are very cold (straight from the refrigerator) or very hot. Opt for warm or lukewarm options.

Important Considerations:

  • Hydration: Ensure adequate fluid intake. If tea is not being accepted, offer diluted broths or soups.
  • Portion Sizes: Consume small, frequent portions rather than large meals.
  • Hygiene: Practice good hand hygiene and avoid close contact with others to prevent the spread of infection.

When to Seek Medical Advice:

Diarrhea can have various causes, from dietary indiscretions to more serious viral infections. If symptoms do not improve or worsen despite these dietary recommendations, consult a doctor, especially if a stomach bug is circulating. While the suggested diet helps manage symptoms, it may not address the underlying cause of severe or persistent diarrhea.
