How to Craft Thin Birthday Candles for Cakes
Beeswax honeycomb sheets are available in various sizes. For long and slim candles, sheets at least 20 cm long are required. Correspondingly, waxed round wicks of 20 cm are suitable. If you have larger sheets, such as 25 x 15 cm or 40 x 13 cm, wicks of 35 cm can be used and trimmed. Wicks can also be purchased by the meter. Sets including beeswax sheets and wicks are also available.
Step 1: Cut the Beeswax Honeycomb
Using a knife or scissors on a firm surface, cut the wax sheets into strips. For candles 20 to 25 cm long, cut strips 1.8 to 2 cm wide lengthwise from the sheet. For slightly longer candles, cut strips 2.2 to 2.5 cm wide to ensure stability.
Step 2: Warm the Wax Strips with a Hair Dryer
Briefly warming the beeswax strips with a hair dryer makes them more pliable and prevents the wax from breaking during rolling.
Step 3: Pre-shape with a Wooden Skewer
Using a round wooden skewer, slightly roll up the long edges of the wax strip. This makes it easier to incorporate the wick later.
Step 4: Insert the Wick and Roll the Candle
Place the round wick onto the wax strip. Gently press the wax from one side onto the wick and then slowly roll the wax tightly around the wick.
Step 5: Press the Edges Firmly
Ensure the final edge is pressed firmly with your fingers after rolling to prevent the candle from unrolling. To achieve a round shape, gently roll the candle on a tabletop with your palm. The finished candles can then be placed on cakes, pastries, or muffins.
