Creating DIY Dollhouse Floors with Epoxy Resin

This guide details the process of creating custom, interchangeable flooring for a dollhouse using epoxy resin. The aim is to produce durable and aesthetically pleasing floors that can be easily swapped out.

The initial focus for the dollhouse renovation is on creating removable flooring. This approach offers flexibility in design and allows for future changes in style or material preference, avoiding permanent installations like traditional tiling or carpeting.

Materials Required:

• Epoxy resin
• Wood base for flooring
• Mosaic tile adhesive
• Mosaic tile shards
• Granite chips
• Wooden spatulas
• Protective sheeting (foil or tarp)
• Hot glue

Method for Creating Epoxy Resin Flooring:

First Attempt: Using a Stainless Steel Frame

1. Prepare the Base: Adhere mosaic tile shards and granite chips to the wooden base using mosaic tile adhesive.
2. Create a Mold: Attempt to use an adjustable stainless steel baking frame as a mold. Seal the frame edges with packing tape and secure it around the wooden base.
3. Mix Epoxy Resin: Combine the epoxy resin and hardener according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Adding a few drops of epoxy dye can provide color. Mix slowly to minimize bubble formation.
4. Pour Resin: Carefully pour the mixed epoxy resin into the mold, again pouring slowly to reduce air bubbles. Allow the resin to cure, typically overnight.
5. Demolding Issues: Upon attempting to remove the cured resin from the stainless steel frame, it was found that the frame was damaged and difficult to separate, resulting in a setback.

Second Attempt: Using a Wooden Spatula Frame

1. Construct the Mold: Cut wooden spatulas to size by removing the rounded ends. Use wood glue to attach these spatulas around the edge of the wooden base, creating a shallow frame.
2. Prepare the Work Surface: Place protective sheeting (foil or a garbage bag) underneath the base to prevent the resin from sticking to the work surface. Ensure the sheeting is level.
3. Seal Edges: Apply hot glue around the perimeter of the mold on the protective sheeting. This helps to contain the resin and prevent it from leaking out from under the base.
4. Pour and Cure Resin: Mix and pour the epoxy resin as described in the first attempt. Allow it to cure.
5. Finishing Touches: Once cured, the wooden spatula frame can be sanded down. If the surface texture is not satisfactory (e.g., due to bubbles or unattached particles), an additional layer of resin can be applied until the desired finish is achieved.

This method results in a more manageable and less damaging way to create custom epoxy resin dollhouse floors.
