DIY Garland for Starting School

Crafting a Pencil-Themed Garland for the First Day of School
With the start of school approaching, this guide provides instructions for creating a personalized garland to welcome children to their new academic journey. This DIY project uses simple materials and can be completed in a short amount of time.
Materials Needed:
- Colored paper
- Masking tape
- White marker (e.g., Edding)
- Black paper or black stickers
- Twine or string
- Hole punch
- Scissors
- Optional: Glue
Step-by-Step Instructions:
1. Cut Rectangles:
Cut the colored paper into uniform rectangles. The number of rectangles needed depends on the word you wish to spell out on the garland (e.g., “SCHOOL”). Each rectangle will eventually represent a letter.
2. Apply Masking Tape:
Arrange the cut rectangles vertically, side-by-side. Secure two strips of masking tape approximately 3-4 cm from the top edge of each rectangle. The number of tape strips may vary depending on the width of the tape used.
3. Shape the Paper:
Starting from the masking tape line, cut the top edges of each rectangle into a triangular shape to resemble a pencil.
4. Add Black Elements and Lettering:
Cover the bottom section of each pencil shape with small black stickers or cut pieces of black paper to create a chalkboard effect. Using the white marker, write individual letters onto these black sections to spell out your desired word.
5. Punch Holes:
Punch a hole on each side of the pencil shapes, aligning the holes with the masking tape area.
6. Attach the Twine/String:
Thread the twine or string through the punched holes of each pencil element, arranging them in the correct alphabetical order to complete the garland.
This custom garland is now ready for the first day of school. The design can be further personalized by using a child’s favorite colors, incorporating additional stickers, or coordinating with their school bag or gift bag. The garland can also be adapted for other milestones, such as the start of kindergarten or university.
