DIY: Making Sequined Gifts and Decorations

Creating Sequined Decorations and Gifts

Making sequined items is an accessible craft, perfect for creating unique decorations and gifts, especially for the holiday season.

Materials

  • Styrofoam shape
  • Plate sequins
  • Short (13-18 mm) pins (numerous)
  • Long, standard pins with flat silver heads (a few)

Instructions

  1. Initial Pinning: For better durability, insert the first sequin into the center top of the Styrofoam shape using a long, standard pin. Plate sequins have a central hole for inserting pins. Use a long pin for the very last sequin as well. For all other sequins in between, use the short pins. If working with a larger Styrofoam form, long pins with flat silver heads are suitable. For smaller spheres, long pins might pierce through or interfere with each other. It is crucial that once a pin is inserted, it remains in place, as the Styrofoam will not hold a pin in the same spot twice.

  2. Sequins Placement: Arrange approximately five sequins around the first central sequin, ensuring they slightly overlap and are staggered. Continue adding rounds of sequins in this manner, increasing the number per round. Midway through the shape, the number of sequins per round will decrease until a final sequin is placed in the center.

  3. Adding a Hanging Loop: If the intention is to hang the finished item, it is recommended to attach a thread or string before beginning the sequin placement. A thin, tear-resistant synthetic cord can be used. Alternatively, a wire can be inserted vertically through the center of the shape. An eyelet with the hanging thread can be attached at the top, and a piece of wire can be inserted at the bottom to secure it.

Working time will vary depending on the size and shape of the Styrofoam form. With practice, the process becomes more efficient.
