DIY Sewn Heart Keychain

This guide outlines the process of creating a DIY heart-shaped keychain using fabric scraps and paracord knotting techniques.

Materials Required:

  • Fabric scraps
  • Stuffing or fiberfill (craft supply store), or finely chopped old nylon stockings
  • Sewing thread
  • Durable cord (e.g., paracord, bead cord)
  • Keyring

Tools Required:

  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine or needle for hand sewing
  • Sewing needle
  • Lighter

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Heart Shape: Fold a piece of fabric in half and cut out a small heart shape of your desired size.
  2. Sew the Heart: Place the two fabric heart pieces right sides together. Sew around the edges, leaving an opening of approximately 1-2 cm (depending on the heart size) for stuffing.
  3. Turn and Stuff: Turn the sewn heart right side out through the opening. Use a pencil or similar tool to help evert the corners. Fill the heart with stuffing until it is firm but still soft.
  4. Close the Opening: Hand-sew the opening closed using an invisible stitch for a neat finish. This stitch involves alternating small stitches between the top and bottom fabric layers.
  5. Attach the Cord: Take a piece of durable cord (approximately 20-30 cm). Wrap it around the top point of the heart, securing it on each side and tying a knot in the center. Ensure about 15-20 cm of cord remains free.
  6. Knot the Paracord: Using the remaining cord, attach a new piece of cord (about 20 cm long, preferably a different color) to the initial cord using the “Cobra Knot” paracord technique.
    • Cobra Knot Technique:
      • Lay one outer cord (OC) over the center cords (CC).
      • Lay the second outer cord (OC) under the center cords (CC) and bring it up through the loop formed by the first OC.
      • Pull both outer cords to tighten the knot.
      • Repeat the process, alternating sides for each knot.
      • Continue knotting until the desired length is achieved.
  7. Create the Loop: Before reaching the desired length, push the knotting upwards towards the initial knot on the heart. Trim one of the center cords to create a loop for the keyring. Knot the remaining cord securely around this loop.
  8. Seal the Ends: Trim the ends of the outer cords to a few millimeters. Carefully melt the ends with a lighter and press them against the knotting with a tool (like the side of the lighter) to seal them and prevent unraveling.
  9. Attach the Keyring: Thread the keyring through the created loop.

The creation of these heart keychains is relatively quick, with each piece taking approximately 30 minutes to complete.
