DIY - Watering Station for Birds and Insects

This guide provides instructions for creating simple, attractive watering stations for birds and insects using readily available materials. The project requires minimal effort and yields satisfying results.

Required Materials

  • Plastic sphere (e.g., clear plastic Christmas ornaments)
  • Twine or string
  • Hot glue gun

Creating a Cost-Effective Watering Station

To construct these DIY watering stations, two halves of a plastic sphere are needed. The spheres are typically sold as fillable ornaments in craft stores and come in various sizes. The existing hangers on the spheres can be used to attach twine for hanging.

The two halves of the sphere should be fitted together so that the back is sealed and the front is partially open. After a test with a small amount of water to ensure a proper fit, use hot glue to secure the touching points. Hold them together for approximately one minute until the glue is firm. Allow the stations to dry completely for a day before hanging.

Adding Elements for Insects

While birds do not require specific aids to access the water, it is crucial to provide landing spots for insects to prevent drowning. Adding small stones, twigs, or leaves inside the station will offer a safe place for insects to rest and drink.

An earlier attempt to seal the seam with double-sided tape proved unsuccessful as the heat caused the adhesive to loosen. Therefore, using a hot glue gun is essential for a secure bond.

Another simple option involves utilizing small water and food dishes designed for birdcages or rodent cages. These can be easily hung on fences or climbing structures, offering insects a small “bathing paradise” and a vital water source.
