Europallets: A Trend for Floors and Balconies

Europallets have become a popular material for DIY furniture and garden projects, valued for their affordability, vintage aesthetic, and versatility.
Understanding Pallets
Pallets are transport platforms designed to carry unit loads between industrial and commercial facilities. They must be robust, capable of bearing significant weight, and easily moved by forklifts.
Types of Pallets:
- Europallet: Characterized by specific dimensions (800 x 1200 x 144 mm) and constructed with 11 boards, 9 blocks, and 78 special nails. They can support up to 2000 kg.
- Industrial Pallet: Wider than a Europallet, measuring 120 x 100 cm.
- Düsseldorf Pallet (Half Pallet): Measures 80 x 60 cm.
Many multi-use pallets undergo intensive treatment for durability, which may not always be ideal for indoor use. Disposable pallets, often used for private deliveries, can have custom dimensions and may meet higher hygiene standards.
When constructing furniture from multiple pallets, it is recommended to either consistently use Europallets or carefully measure existing pallets to ensure uniformity.
Sourcing Pallets
Pallets can often be found in commercial areas, particularly near loading docks. Businesses may offer used pallets for a small deposit or a nominal fee, especially if they are looking to dispose of them. For pallets in pristine condition, purchasing new ones online or from wood or building material suppliers is an option, with prices typically ranging from 15 to 20 Euros.
Pallet Preparation
Used pallets require thorough cleaning. A pressure washer is ideal, but a hose and brush can also be effective. Alternatively, vigorous dry brushing may suffice. Allow pallets to dry completely before proceeding.
- De-splintering: Sand all surfaces to remove splinters and slightly round off edges. Ensure no nails protrude, as these can cause injuries or damage equipment.
- Surface Treatment: Treat the surface to achieve the desired finish. Options include:
- Linseed oil: For a natural look that highlights the wood grain.
- Wall paint or colored glaze: For adding color.
- Lacquer: Requires a very smooth surface.
Essential Tools
- Cordless screwdriver or drill (for removing/inserting screws)
- Sander (orbital sander for large areas, hand sanding for corners)
- Jigsaw (for more complex designs)
- Hammer, pliers, tape measure, combination pliers, sandpaper, painting supplies
Project Ideas
Pallets offer a wide range of creative possibilities, from simple furniture to larger structures.
Beginner Project: Coffee/Lounge Table
- Simple: Stack two prepared pallets on top of each other.
- With Wheels: Attach four heavy-duty casters to a prepared pallet and place a glass top on it.
Beginner Project: Sofas and Lounge Furniture
- Basic Setup: Stack prepared pallets in two layers to form the desired shape (straight, L-shape, or U-shape) against a wall. Connect pallets using flat connectors and screw the layers together.
- Cushions: Use foam mattresses cut to size and covered with fabric. Professional upholstery services are available if needed.
- Backrests: For added comfort, remove the blocks and lower slats from some pallets, leaving only the upper slats. Attach these vertically to the back of the sofa structure. Covering these with thin foam and fabric is recommended.
Advanced Project: Vertical Garden Wall
Ideal for balconies and small gardens, this project utilizes pallets for vertical gardening:
- Position the pallet upright with the bottom facing forward.
- Attach boards below the horizontal cross-members to create planting troughs, securing them with nails or screws.
- Line the troughs with pond liner to hold soil.
- Drill drainage holes in the liner and boards to allow excess water to escape.
- Secure the pallet firmly to a wall using stable anchors and screws, as the pallet itself can weigh over 20 kg.
- Fill the troughs with substrate or soil and plant, preferably with trailing plants for a lush green effect.
