Fabric Bands or Cords from Fabric Scraps

Creating Fabric Bands or Cords from Scraps
This guide explains how to create decorative fabric bands or cords from leftover fabric pieces, suitable for gift wrapping or embellishing children’s clothing.
Materials and Preparation
- Materials: Fabric scraps, scissors.
- Cutting: Cut fabric scraps into strips measuring 1 to 1.5 centimeters in width. Some fabrics can be torn rather than cut. The width of the fabric strips will determine the thickness of the resulting bands.
- Joining: Begin by knotting two fabric strips together. It is advisable to make one strip slightly shorter than the other to minimize tangling.
The Twisting Technique
- Twisting: Take one fabric strip and twist it tightly clockwise with your right hand, twisting away from yourself.
- Laying: Lay the twisted end across the untwisted strip.
- Continuing: Twist the untwisted strip tightly in the same direction (away from yourself) and lay it over the already twisted strip.
- Holding: The fingers of the right hand twist the fabric, while the thumb and index finger of the left hand hold the twisted section.
Joining New Strips
- When one of the fabric strips reaches its end, knot a new fabric strip to it and continue the twisting process.
- Maintain the practice of having one strip consistently shorter than the other. This makes it easier to incorporate new strips without the band unraveling.
- The twisting process can be demanding on the hands; regular breaks are recommended.
- Once the technique is mastered, it becomes a quick and efficient process to produce significant lengths of fabric bands.
