Grow Your Own Sweet Potato Plant

Grow Your Own Sweet Potato Plant
Sweet potato plants, with their attractive vining growth, can be easily grown from a tuber and water, making them an interesting and unique indoor decoration. Instead of discarding sprouted sweet potatoes, they can be repurposed to grow beautiful, leafy plants. Within a few weeks, the tuber will develop roots, followed by the growth of shoots and green leaves.
Materials Needed
- Sweet potatoes
- Glass (approx. 450 ml capacity recommended)
- Water
How to Grow a Sweet Potato in a Glass
Step 1: Select Your Sweet Potato
Choose a sweet potato that has no external damage to its skin, as damage can lead to rot in water. If the sweet potato already has a small sprout, it is often more likely to succeed.
Step 2: Place the Sweet Potato in the Glass
Position the sweet potato vertically in a glass that is half-filled with water, ensuring the narrower end points upwards.
Step 3: Choose a Sunny Location
Place the glass containing the sweet potato in a warm, sunny spot, such as a windowsill.
Step 4: Change Water Regularly
Change the water in the glass one to two times per week. Fresh water is crucial to prevent the tuber from rotting. Roots will develop first, followed by the appearance of the first leaves. Depending on the tuber, this process typically takes about five to six weeks, resulting in a vining plant.
Sweet Potato Plants as Decoration
The vines of a sweet potato plant can grow quite long. For use as a table decoration, long shoots can be easily trimmed. This encourages new growth from the bottom and promotes a fuller appearance for the plant.
Transplanting Sweet Potatoes Outdoors
In May, if the shoots have grown sufficiently long (approximately 20 to 30 centimeters), the sweet potato tuber can be planted outdoors. When transplanting, plant the tuber only halfway into the soil, ensuring the other half remains exposed above ground.
