Hairy Times: Beards from Hipster to Movember

The Evolution and Significance of Beards

Beards, in their various forms such as the goatee, the soul patch, the ducktail, and the hipster beard, evoke diverse opinions. Their presence has been a subject of discussion for centuries, serving as status symbols, tools for persuasion, and even indicators of political leanings.

Throughout history, prominent figures have influenced beard styles. Abraham Lincoln popularized the full beard without a mustache, known today as the “Schifferfräse.” Karl Marx, eschewing vanity, sported a wild, untamed beard. Emperor Wilhelm II of Germany became a trendsetter with his distinctive mustache, characterized by sharp, upward-curving ends.

In the 20th century, beards saw periods of decline, with exceptions like Charlie Chaplin. However, the 1960s saw hair, including beards, become an expression of a lifestyle. The “Pornobalken,” a thin mustache extending below the corners of the mouth, was popularized by Jimi Hendrix, while The Beatles embraced bushy beards as part of the counterculture movement. For ZZ Top, beards became a signature look year-round.

During the 1980s, beards experienced a resurgence. Freddy Mercury and Tom Selleck contributed to the popularity of prominent mustaches. The 1990s saw the rise of the goatee, often combined with a beard, popularized by the rap scene and sometimes resembling the character Catweazle.

Modern Beard Styles and Perceptions

The new millennium brought about a shift, with men embracing their “feminine” side by grooming chest hair, while simultaneously celebrating masculinity with the “3-day beard.” Statistically, the 3-day beard is considered the most attractive beard style by women globally.

In the last decade, full beards have become prevalent. Modern barbershops offer various grooming services, including trimming, oiling, and waxing, to maintain these styles. The “hipster beard” is a refined version of the historical full beard, reminiscent of the “barbarians” who, unlike the clean-shaven Romans, distinguished themselves by their facial hair.

Beard texture and color are as individual as their wearers, ranging from straight and bushy to curly and sparse. These characteristics allow for diverse styles, from the smooth mustache of Clark Gable to the chin strap of Johnny Depp or the Henriquatre worn by Kevin Kurányi.

Societal Views on Beards

While beards are significant for many men, their perception by women varies. Questions arise regarding whether beards inherently enhance masculinity, attractiveness, or simply cause irritation. These are subjective answers that each woman may determine for herself.

Movember: A Charitable Endeavor

The “Movember” initiative, founded in 2003, encourages men to grow mustaches (“Mo”) during November to raise awareness and funds for men’s health projects, including mental health, suicide prevention, and prostate and testicular cancer. This movement has significantly supported men’s health initiatives worldwide.
