How to Make Seed Starting Pots from Toilet Paper Rolls
This guide provides instructions on how to easily create biodegradable seed starting pots using empty toilet paper rolls.
Instructions
- Prepare the Roll: Make four equally long cuts into one end of the cardboard tube. These cuts should be opposing, forming four distinct flaps.
- Form the Base (Part 1): Fold the first flap downwards to begin forming a partial base.
- Form the Base (Part 2): Continue by folding the next flap (to the right of the first one) downwards.
- Complete the Base: Keep folding the remaining flaps in sequence until a stable, interlocking base is formed. The roll should now stand upright.
- Prepare for Planting: Label the finished pots and fill them with seed-starting soil. Place one seed in each pot. This method eliminates the need for pricking out young seedlings later.
Important Information for Germination
- Temperature: Seeds typically require temperatures around 25 degrees Celsius (77 degrees Fahrenheit) for successful germination.
- Environment: Place the seed pots in a mini-greenhouse, which can be homemade or purchased. Alternatively, arrange them on a plate or in a large planting tray and cover with plastic wrap to create a humid environment.
- Post-Germination Care: For optimal growth, position the pots in a bright, moderately warm spot, protected from drafts. Once seedlings sprout, remove the cover to ensure adequate air circulation and reduce the risk of mold formation.
- Transplanting: Plants can remain in the toilet paper roll for transplanting directly into the garden. The wet cardboard will decompose naturally in the soil, providing additional nutrients.
Additional Tips
- Adjusting the Base: Watering the seedlings will moisten the cardboard, allowing the base to be gently adjusted or pressed for better stability if needed.
- Increased Stability: Tying several finished pots together with garden wire can provide additional stability, especially for larger batches of seedlings.
