How to Properly Shorten a String Curtain and Reuse Scraps

This guide provides instructions on how to shorten a string curtain and repurpose the leftover threads.

Shortening a String Curtain

  1. Hang the Curtain: After hanging the string curtain, spread it out.
  2. Allow to Settle: Let the curtain hang for 24 hours. This allows any initial kinks to straighten out, ensuring precise cutting.
  3. Use the Right Scissors: Employ a dedicated fabric or craft scissors for cutting. These scissors cut threads more cleanly and efficiently, resulting in straighter ends that fray less and accumulate less dirt.

Repurposing String Curtain Scraps

Keep the cut thread ends organized and save them. These can be used for various DIY projects, including:

  • Tie-backs: Create matching tie-backs to gather the curtain.
  • Tassels: Make decorative tassels.
  • Pompoms: Craft charming pompoms.
  • Costume Wigs: Utilize longer scraps to create novelty wigs.

Creating a Costume Wig from Scraps:

  1. Prepare the Base: Use an old fabric swimming cap or a discarded T-shirt material hat. Place it on a wig stand or a similarly shaped object.
  2. Prepare Thread Bundles: Gather 6-8 threads and lay them parallel. Secure each bundle about 1-2 cm from the straight edge using a clip, wire, or painter’s tape.
  3. Attach Bundles: Holding the secured end of a thread bundle, apply hot glue to this section. Adhere the bundle to the cap, starting from the outer edge (hairline) and working inwards and upwards.
  4. Remove Securing: Once all bundles are attached, remove the clips, wires, or tape.
  5. Style the Wig: Cut and style the threads to achieve the desired wig shape.
