Knitted House or Bed Socks

This guide provides instructions for knitting warm house or bed socks. Using double-stranded sock yarn is recommended for enhanced warmth.

Knitting Instructions:

  1. Casting On and Ribbing: For a size 40, cast on 40 stitches. Knit 4 rows in a rib stitch pattern.
  2. Main Body: Continue knitting in stockinette stitch until the piece measures 7 cm in total height.
  3. Heel Shaping (Short Rows): Knit short rows by decreasing stitches. Knit the 13th and 14th stitches together, and repeat this process until 14 stitches remain on the needle. Then, pick up 13 stitches from the side panels. After the first pickup, cast on 8 additional stitches, and then pick up another 13 stitches on the opposite side.
  4. Knitting with Double-Pointed Needles: Switch to double-pointed needles. Distribute the stitches evenly, with 12 stitches per needle.
  5. Toe Shaping: Begin decreasing for the toe after the sock reaches 20.5 cm. On the 1st and 3rd needles, knit the 10th and 11th stitches together. On the 2nd and 4th needles, knit the 2nd and 3rd stitches together (simple decrease). On the subsequent row, perform a slipped stitch, knit 1, pass the slipped stitch over the knitted stitch (decrease).
  6. Continuing Decreases: Continue decreasing every second row. When there are 6 stitches remaining, decrease on every row. Once there are 2 stitches per needle, thread the yarn through the remaining stitches, pull tight, and fasten off. The total length of the sock should be approximately 26 cm.

Finishing:

If the socks are intended for use as house slippers, apply sock stop material to the soles for improved grip.
