Knitting Instructions: Mini Sock Keychain

  1. Cast on 6 stitches (M) on each of the 5 needles (N).
  2. Knit the leg section approximately 4-5 cm high, alternating 1 knit (re) stitch and 1 purl (li) stitch.
  3. Knit 3 rows in stockinette stitch (all knit).
  4. Heel Turn: Knit across needle 1. Turn. Knit the first 2 M on needle 1 together, then purl the following 4 M.
  5. Turn. Knit 6 M from needle 4, purl the first 4 M, and knit the last 2 M.
  6. Turn. Knit all 12 M on this needle (combining stitches from N1 and N4).
  7. Repeat steps 4-6 until you have completed the 5th purl row on the left side (indicated by “knots” formed by the first and last 2 M on the purl side).
  8. Turning the Heel: Divide the stitches on the knit side into three sections (3 M, 4 M, 4 M for this mini sock). Knit the first 4 M. Knit 3 M from the second section, then knit the 4th M of this section together with the 1st M of the third section.
  9. Turn. Purl 4 M. Purl the 4th M together with the 1st M of the next section. Turn. Repeat this process until only the central 4 M remain on the needle. This completes the heel.
  10. Picking Up Stitches for the Foot: Distribute the 4 heel stitches back onto needles 4 and 1 (2 M each). Knit across the 2 M on needle 1 and the 2 M on needle 4.
  11. Increasing for the Instep: On needle 1, pick up stitches between the heel “knots” – 1 stitch in each gap, plus an additional stitch, and then 1 “crosswise” stitch. This increases the stitch count on needle 1 to 9 M.
  12. Knit across needle 2 (6 M).
  13. Knit across needle 3 (6 M).
  14. On needle 4, follow the same picking-up process as needle 1, but in the reverse direction, to also achieve 9 M.
  15. Knit one round in stockinette stitch on all needles.
  16. Decreasing for the Foot: Start with a decrease round. On needle 1, knit to the last 2 stitches, knit them together, then knit the final stitch. Knit across needles 2 and 3. On needle 4, knit the first stitch, then knit the 2nd and 3rd stitches together, and knit the remaining stitches. This round should result in 6 M on needles 2 and 3, and 8 M on needles 1 and 4.
  17. Knit one round without decreases.
  18. Repeat steps 16 and 17 until you have 6 M on each needle.
  19. Knit several rounds (approx. 10) in stockinette stitch as desired for the sock length.
  20. Shaping the Toe: On needle 1, knit to the second-to-last stitch and knit the last two stitches together. On needle 2, knit the first stitch, slip the next stitch purlwise, knit the following stitch, then pass the slipped stitch over the knitted stitch. Knit the remaining stitches. Repeat the toe shaping for needles 3 and 4 as for needles 1 and 2, respectively.
  21. Continue decreasing in this manner, working decreases at the beginning of needles 1 and 3, and at the end of needles 2 and 4, until only 2 M remain on each needle.
  22. Finishing: Combine the stitches. Take 2 M from needle 1 and knit them together onto needle 1. Repeat for needle 3. You should now have 2 M on needle 1 and 2 M on needle 3.
  23. Use a small crochet hook to pull the first stitch of needle 1 through the second stitch of needle 1, creating one stitch. Repeat for needle 3. Then, pull the stitch from needle 1 through the stitches from needle 3, creating a single loop. Cut the yarn, leaving a tail, and pull it through the loop to secure. Turn the sock inside out and weave in all loose ends using the crochet hook.

Turn the sock right side out, insert a shopping chip, and attach a keychain ring.
