Knotting a Lanyard from Paracord

How to Knot a Paracord Lanyard
This guide explains how to create a lanyard using paracord, ideal for utilizing leftover cord pieces.
Materials Needed:
- Two paracord strands, approximately 80 cm each (shorter strands will result in a shorter lanyard). Using two different colors is recommended for easier knotting.
- Scissors
- Lighter
- Keyring
Step-by-Step Knotting Instructions:
Prepare the Paracord: For easier knotting, it is recommended to remove the inner core strands of the paracord (typically seven nylon strands).
Start the Lanyard: Hold one paracord strand in the middle between your thumb and index finger. This section will form the loop of the lanyard. Place the second paracord strand horizontally across the first.
Begin the Knotting Pattern: Take one strand (e.g., the colored cord) and bring it upwards and then downwards. Then, take the other cord and weave it over and under the first cord’s strands, repeating this on both sides. Continue this weaving pattern, ensuring you pull the strands tightly after each pass to create a uniform and neat result.
Tighten the Loop: After the first two rounds of knotting, you can release the initial loop and pull everything tight.
Color Choice: The starting color for the knotting process does not affect the final outcome. You can also alternate colors during the process if desired.
Finishing the Ends: Leave approximately 1 cm of cord at the end of each strand. Carefully melt the end of each strand with a lighter and quickly press it against the main body of the lanyard to secure it. Repeat this process for all four remaining ends to create a clean finish.
Final Product:
The finished lanyard will have a braided appearance. This knotting technique also looks attractive when using thinner, paracord-like materials.
