Make Your Own Coasters from Rope

DIY Rope Coasters: A Step-by-Step Guide
This guide explains how to create durable and attractive coasters from cotton rope, offering two methods: sewing and knitting. These coasters are gentle on surfaces, washable, and easy to make.
Method 1: Sewn Rope Coasters
Materials:
- Twisted cotton rope (8 mm diameter, at least 2 meters length)
- Embroidery floss
- Sewing needle and thread
- Scissors
Instructions:
- Secure one end of the rope by tightly wrapping it with embroidery floss. This prevents fraying and enhances appearance.
- Coil the rope like a heating coil, forming the desired coaster shape (e.g., 13x13 cm for coffee cups and small pots).
- Sew the coiled rope together using a needle and thread, stitching the rope segments adjacent to each other.
- Secure the other end of the rope with embroidery floss, similar to the starting end.
- Allow about 1.5 cm of the rope to extend beyond the sewn section and trim the excess with scissors.
Alternative: For those who prefer not to sew, hot glue can be used to join the rope. However, be aware that glue might be visible on the underside, potentially affecting the coaster’s appearance.
Method 2: Knitted Rope Coasters
Materials:
- Twisted cotton rope (5 mm diameter)
- Knitting needles (size 9)
- Leather or fabric scraps
- Eyelets with washers OR rivet fasteners
- Scissors
Small Coasters (approx. 13x13 cm):
Instructions:
- Cast on 8 stitches using the 5 mm cotton rope and size 9 knitting needles.
- Knit in the plain knit stitch (one row knit, one row purl) until the coaster reaches a height of approximately 12 cm.
- Bind off the stitches.
- Prepare a leather or fabric strip (approx. 10 cm long, 1.5 cm wide).
- Thread the strip through the edge stitches of the coaster and secure it with a rivet fastener.
Large Coasters (approx. 19.5x19.5 cm):
Instructions:
- Cast on 14 stitches.
- Knit in the plain knit stitch until the coaster reaches a height of approximately 18 cm.
- Bind off the stitches.
- Prepare a leather or fabric strip (approx. 16 cm long, 2 cm wide).
- Overlap the ends of the strip, punch holes using a hole punch, and secure with an eyelet and washer.
Alternative Hanging Options: Instead of leather strips with rivets, fabric strips can be riveted or simply sewn through the edge stitches for hanging.
