Moving Out: What Do I Need to Consider? (Checklist & Tips)

Moving can be an exciting transition, but it requires thorough planning to avoid chaos. This guide provides essential steps and tips for a smooth relocation.

Moving Checklist

Before the Move:

  • Find helpers.
  • Declutter: Decide what to keep and what to buy new.
  • Organize transportation (vehicle).
  • Gather packing supplies (boxes, containers).
  • Arrange for internet service.
  • Pack as much as possible in advance.
  • Prepare snacks and drinks for helpers.

After the Move:

  • Register at the local residents’ registration office.
  • Re-register your vehicle if applicable.

Gaining Experience

Offer assistance to friends and acquaintances when they move. This not only increases the likelihood of them helping you in return but also allows you to learn valuable lessons about what works and what doesn’t.

Pre-Move Preparation: Decluttering and Planning

Several weeks before moving, assess your belongings. Ruthlessly discard anything no longer needed, as clutter often accumulates over time. Consider what will fit into your new space and if new furniture is required. Factor in potential long delivery times for large items or appliances, or explore options for used furniture.

Internet Connection

Arrange for an internet connection well in advance, as activation can take 3-4 weeks.

Organizing Help

Plan how to transport your belongings. Determine if a large van or a smaller vehicle will suffice, or if friends or family can assist with their vehicles. Request help early to ensure adequate arrangements can be made.

Efficient Packing

Source sturdy moving boxes from classified ads or ask supermarkets for banana boxes. Alternatively, consider renting moving boxes from moving companies. To save on boxes, utilize drawers, laundry baskets, backpacks, and suitcases. For furniture with drawers, secure them with tape to prevent them from opening during transport. Pack smaller items like makeup or office supplies in shoeboxes.

Protect fragile items like glassware and dishes by wrapping them in newspaper or towels and scarves. Distribute the weight of books by packing them in multiple boxes with lighter items on top.

Label boxes clearly on the side with bullet points indicating the contents. For rented boxes or items you plan to pass on, use masking tape for labels.

For clothing on hangers, a helpful trick is to tape hangers together and pack clothes from bottom to top inside pillow or duvet covers.

The Survival Kit

Prepare a survival kit with essential items needed immediately after moving:

  • Towels
  • Toothpaste & toothbrush
  • Shower gel, shampoo, etc.
  • Toilet paper
  • A change of clothes
  • Charger
  • Favorite snacks
  • Wallet
  • Keys

Packing a separate box with essential kitchenware (pots, glasses, dishes) will allow for quick meal preparation.

Maximize pre-move packing to ensure helpers can focus on the main task on moving day.

Snacks and Refreshments

To maintain energy and morale, provide snacks. Prepare-ahead options like puff pastry snacks or mini quiches are ideal. Ordering pizza is also an option. Ensure ample beverages, including caffeinated drinks, juices, and water, are available.

Administrative Tasks

After the move, complete necessary administrative tasks. Register at the local residents’ office within two weeks of moving in. If you own a car, re-register it at the local vehicle registration office or online if your ID card has online functionality. This marks the completion of your first move and the beginning of a new chapter.
