Propagating Dipladenia

How to Propagate Dipladenia (Mandevilla)
Propagating Dipladenia from cuttings is a straightforward way to create new plants. This method involves rooting cuttings in soil within a humid environment.
Step-by-Step Propagation Guide
1. Taking Cuttings
In the autumn, take cuttings from a healthy plant.
- Cut shoots that are approximately 10 cm long.
- Remove all leaves from the cutting, leaving only the top two.
2. Planting and Rooting
- Prepare Pots: Fill small flower pots with seeding soil. Moisten the soil well, but avoid making it waterlogged.
- Plant Cuttings: Use a small wooden skewer or stick to make a hole in the soil. Carefully insert the cutting into the hole to avoid breakage.
- Create a Humid Environment: Place the potted cuttings inside a plastic bag and seal it. This acts as a mini-greenhouse, maintaining the moisture needed for rooting.
- Weekly Maintenance: Once a week, open the bag for about 30 minutes to ventilate. If the soil is dry, moisten it with a little water. Reseal the bag afterward.
- Rooting Period: The cuttings should develop roots and become established within about four weeks.
Care for New Plants
- Moving Outdoors: The new plants can be moved outside after the last frost in spring.
- Overwintering: Dipladenia are not frost-hardy and must be brought indoors before the first night frosts. For winter care, prune the plants back and place them in a cool, bright room. Water them about once a week.
