Regrowing: How to Easily Regrow Vegetables

Regrowing Vegetables
Regrowing vegetables is a simple method to cultivate new produce from kitchen scraps. This guide provides instructions for common vegetables that can be easily regrown at home.
Suitable Vegetables for Regrowing
Several vegetables and herbs are well-suited for regrowing:
- Green Onions
- Onions
- Garlic
- Celery
- Tomatoes
- Basil
How to Regrow Vegetables
The easiest vegetables to regrow are green onions and celery. For both, it is crucial that the base or “stalk” is intact; pre-cut celery from stores without a base will not work. Potted basil is also simple to regrow. Tomatoes, onions, and garlic are also suitable but might require different conditions.
Green Onions and Celery
For green onions and celery, only a container and water are needed:
- Cut the green onion or celery about 2-3 cm (approximately 1 inch) above the root end or base.
- Place the cut base into a glass or an empty yogurt cup filled with water.
- Change the water daily or every other day.
New growth for green onions can be observed in about 3 days, while celery takes slightly longer. After approximately one week, a small harvest might be possible. The same base can be used to regrow multiple times.
Basil
Basil from a store pot is easy to regrow. Simply ensure it is watered regularly. New leaves will start to grow within a few days.
Onions and Garlic
If onions or garlic begin to sprout, plant them directly into potting soil. Water daily. Within a few days, new green shoots (similar to green onions) will emerge.
Tomatoes
To regrow tomatoes, use the pulp containing the seeds:
- Place the tomato pulp with seeds into a small container or tray filled with potting soil.
- Water daily.
New growth should be visible within a few days.
