Repelling Wasps and Hornets

When a wasp approaches on the balcony or attempts to fly into a room, clapping your hands loudly and repeatedly until the insect retreats is an effective method. Ensure the escape route is clear; for instance, do not stand in a doorway if the wasp needs to exit the room. This technique is also applicable to hornets. Accompanying the clapping with short, loud vocalizations such as “Shoo!” or “Get out!” can enhance its effectiveness.
This method is thought to work because insects perceive sudden loud sounds through openings in their bodies, which they find uncomfortable.
This approach is not effective near a nest, as the insects’ instinct to protect their brood overrides their fear of noise. To deter wasps, sweet items should be stored in airtight containers, as they have a strong attraction to sugar.
If wasps become overly aggressive or pose a risk to children, they can be neutralized by clapping them between the palms. The stunned insects will fall to the ground, remaining incapacitated for a few seconds. During this time, it is advisable to move away. The wasp will eventually recover and fly off. If moving away is not an option and no other solution is available, a wasp can be killed with a shoe. However, killing a wasp should be avoided unless absolutely necessary due to their ecological importance.
Exercise caution when clapping wasps to avoid them falling on children or others. The wasp cannot deploy its stinger during the brief period of incapacitation, so hands are generally safe.
