Upcycling: Rain Protection Roof for Window Boxes

Upcycling Project: DIY Rain Shelter for Window Boxes
This guide outlines how to construct a protective rain cover for window boxes using repurposed metal coat hangers, an effective way to shield plants from excessive rainfall.
Materials Needed
- Metal coat hangers (e.g., from dry cleaners)
- Strong, clear plastic sheeting
- Stapler or other suitable fastening method
Instructions
- Prepare the Hangers: Take a metal coat hanger. Manually pull the lower, longer straight section outwards from the center to form a blunt point. Ensure the hanging hook remains intact, as it contributes to stability.
- Position the Supports: Insert one shaped hanger into the soil at each end of the window box. Position the hanger so the hook faces downwards or towards the inside of the box for optimal stability. The blunt point of the hanger should extend upwards, forming the end of the roof ridge. The hanger itself will act as an open gable, positioned across the width of the box.
- Attach the Cover: Cut the strong, clear plastic sheeting to the appropriate size. Stretch it over the window box and the prepared hangers, creating a roof-like structure. Secure the sheeting to the hangers; stapling is an effective method for attachment.
- Flexibility and Storage: The completed rain shelter is designed for easy removal. When not needed (e.g., during sunny periods), the hangers and film can be quickly detached and folded for space-saving storage.
Additional Application
This DIY shelter can also serve as protection during cold spring nights to encourage plant growth. For improved insulation, consider using bubble wrap instead of clear plastic sheeting. If using insulating materials, it is crucial to remove the covers during the day to prevent overheating of the plants.
