Self-Watering System with Empty Bottles

Ensuring plants on balconies or terraces are watered while away on vacation can be a challenge if no one is available to help. A simple do-it-yourself (DIY) watering system using empty bottles provides an effective solution. This method can even be set up shortly before departure to ensure plants are cared for during your absence.

How to Create the System

This method requires several empty bottles, preferably with long necks, such as wine or olive oil bottles.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Prepare the Plants: Thoroughly water the plants so the soil is well-saturated before setting up the system.
  2. Prepare the Bottles: Rinse empty glass bottles and fill them completely with water.
  3. Create a Hole: Using a finger, make a small hole in the soil next to each plant, sized for the bottle neck.
  4. Insert the Bottle: Cover the bottle opening with your thumb, quickly invert the bottle, and push its neck as deep as possible into the prepared hole. Ensure the entire bottle neck is embedded in the soil for stability.

Alternative for PET Bottles

If only plastic (PET) bottles are available, they can also be used. Instead of leaving the opening uncapped, bore small holes into the bottle’s lid using a bradawl or knife. Screw the perforated lid onto the water-filled bottle, then invert and insert it into the soil.

How It Works

The water within the inverted bottle will gradually seep into the surrounding soil over several days, maintaining a consistent moisture level. This ensures plants remain hydrated and prevents them from drying out while you are away.
